Description
Escaramuzas are a group of Mexican equestrian female riders who perform horseback riding stunts and routines, a subset of the larger tradition of Charrería which is the national sport and intangible cultural heritage of Mexico as of 1933. Charrería (similar to rodeos) has a long history dating back to the colonial period, but it was only recently in the 1950s that women took their rightful place inside the lienzo charro. An Escaramuza (translated to “skirmish”) typically consists of 8 women riders who perform carefully synchronized and physically taxing choreography, in addition to riding side-saddle in large flowing embellished garments.
I attended the Fiesta Charra 2022 in Lewisville, Texas. This was my very first time going and what a spectacular experience it was to see such a beautiful variety of traditional Mexican dances and Charrería. Much love, tradition, pride and of course ART goes behind each performance and witnessing the Escaramuzas and Charros up close was an honor and privilege.
