Notes from the Artist: ”This painting originates from a peaceful moment at White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas. What caught my eye was the goose casually floating through the water, surrounded by the serene beauty of the lake. I’m always captivated by the birds playing and fishing at the lake. Living in a fast-paced society makes it important to pause and take in nature. I enjoy seeing families gathered to create memories as they bird watch, go sailing or kayaking on the calm waters, and most of all enjoy each other's company. Out of all the things to do, the wildlife at the lake is a major draw, especially for little ones. The lake is home to a variety of birds, including pelicans, wood ducks, mallards, geese, morning doves, egrets, and more. It’s fun to try to spot them all. It helps that these birds are very accustomed to people, so they are quite the photogenic bunch. As a painter, I am always equipped with a camera, but I also find it important to paint outdoors. These studies help capture light and color, which I have done several times at the lake. In this scene, the colors of my photograph were originally quite muted, even monotone. However, part of what makes painting so fun is that I can push the color and mark-making to express my excitement towards the subject. I wanted to capture the serene atmosphere of White Rock Lake and its wildlife so when you look at it, you would feel like you were there with me on the dock.” - Katherine Martínez
