Words from a juror from the international Association of Pastel Society about “Snow Cloaked”:
“This is an example of a painting that speaks to my heart, but doesn’t just please me because I like this kind of thing it’s also done with great panache and excellence. To me, this is the epitome of a fire and ice painting, and it’s done with such clarity and confidence and complicated composition, and just exquisite use of the warm and cool. It isn’t just highlights – look how many colors there are in the highlights. Look how many colors there are and subtleties there are in the dark. Look at how many different ways the pastel is applied. You have strong marks, you have drags, you have blurred areas, you have tone on tone, stumbling of color on color, and with all of the subtle differences, you still never lose the highlight and the darks. That is something I value very much in a painting.”
